A 200-year legacy, beautifully reborn.
Tulou – The Unique Earthen Architecture of Fujian
Tulou, literally meaning “earthen building,” is a remarkable traditional Chinese structure found predominantly in the mountainous regions of Fujian Province. Built by the Hakka people centuries ago, these large, fortified communal dwellings are both practical and culturally rich, designed to house multiple families under one roof.
Architectural Marvel
Tulou are typically circular or rectangular in shape, with thick rammed earth walls that provide natural insulation and protection. Some walls reach up to three feet thick, making the buildings highly durable against storms and even attacks in ancient times. The structures are often several stories tall, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard, creating a self-contained community that promotes safety, privacy, and social cohesion.
Cultural Significance
More than just architecture, Tulou represent the Hakka way of life. Families living within a Tulou share common spaces, such as kitchens, wells, and communal halls, fostering close-knit relationships. The buildings reflect Hakka values of unity, cooperation, and resilience, while also serving as a living museum of traditional Chinese customs, decorations, and ancestral heritage.
UNESCO Recognition
We uphold integrity, innovation, empathy, and commitment as the foundation of our work. These values guide our choices, shape our culture, and reflect our dedication to creating a positive impact for people, communities, and the environment globally.
Visiting a Tulou
Exploring a Tulou offers more than just sightseeing; it is an immersive journey into Hakka culture. Visitors can admire the intricate wooden carvings, experience the communal lifestyle, and even stay overnight in converted rooms, gaining an authentic taste of life in these iconic earthen fortresses.

Ri Sheng Lou:
The Past and Present Lives of a Nearly 200-Year-Old Tulou
Ri Sheng Lou is a Fujian Tulou belonging to the Liang clan, situated by the North Creek of the Jiulong River in Shuangxi Village, Nangang Town, Zhangzhou, Fujian. Constructed during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, around 1835, it is approximately 190 years old. Among the more than 30,000 existing earth buildings in Longyan and Zhangzhou, it is one of the few named “Ri Sheng Lou” that is well-preserved and has been genuinely “revitalized” through adaptive reuse.
